Services for life events

Baptisms

Baptism is the beginning of the Journey of faith, when we thank God for his gift of life and publicly acknowledge his love.

In the Anglican Church, it is common to baptise young children; this is sometimes known as christening.

Baptism is primarily about being welcomed into membership of the Christian church. Parents often want their children to be baptised so that as they grow up they can learn about God and the Church. It is about becoming a member of the Church and we hope that everyone who is baptised, young or older, will become part of the church that serves their community.

During the baptism service, the visible signs of water, being marked with the cross and the lit candle are used to show God’s love.

If you live within the parish of Richmond with Hudswell or you are a member of our congregation, you are very welcome to have your child baptised at St Mary’s Church or to be baptised yourself.

Baptisms normally take place on Sunday during the 10.00am Service or after the service at 12.00pm on the first Sunday of the month.

Anyone who is already baptised, who is interested in being prepared for Confirmation or just exploring their faith more deeply is welcome to contact the Rector.

More information about Baptism is available at www.churchofengland.org/weddings-baptisms-funerals/baptism.aspx

Funerals

A funeral is used to mark the end of a person’s life here on earth. Family and friends come together to express grief, give thanks for the life lived and commend the person into God’s keeping. This can be a small, intimate ceremony or a large occasion in either a packed church or crematorium. Funerals at St Mary's Church, St Michael and All Angels, Downholme, St Edmund's Church, Marske, Darlington Crematorium, Reeth Road Cemetery, Hudswell Cemetery etc tend to be taken by one of our ministry team.

More information about funeral services is available at www.churchofenglandfunerals.org

Remembering Loved Ones

Our service of light is held on the first Sunday in November every year, when those whose funerals have been held in the previous year are remembered by name in prayer. If we have ministered to you, you will receive an invitation to this service. All are welcome to attend and perhaps take the opportunity to light a candle in memory of their loved one.

After the Cards

Bereavement is a very difficult time for the loved ones left behind. We would like to help with the next step by meeting recently bereaved loved ones for coffee in Richmond. We meet at the Morro Lounge on the first Wednesday of the month at 1:30pm. This is an informal atmosphere, and all are welcome.
